In a recent Washington Post article, Leana S. Wen highlights the transformative impact of AI tools in healthcare, particularly in improving patient outcomes. The piece showcases Kaiser Permanente’s success in deploying an AI tool to identify early signs of patient deterioration in hospitals, a task traditionally reliant on clinician vigilance.
This AI system integrates various data points like vital signs and lab tests to alert healthcare teams proactively, helping in the early intervention of potential health crises. The results speak for themselves: a significant reduction in mortality rates. The article also notes the effective use of AI in other hospitals, such as Johns Hopkins, for early sepsis detection.
While Bayesian’s product is referenced in the discussion, the focus remains on the broader benefits and potentials of AI in healthcare.

Bayesian Health is honored to announce that our Targeted Real-Time Early Warning System (TREWS) has been named one of Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2023. Developed in collaboration with researchers at Johns Hopkins University, our clinical AI application significantly improves the early detection of sepsis, a leading cause of death in hospitals. By analyzing a patient’s medical records, symptoms, and lab results, the system alerts clinicians to probable cases of sepsis with a sensitivity rate of 82%, far surpassing typical early-alert systems that operate at 20% to 30% sensitivity.
This recognition underscores the urgent need for healthcare systems to invest in clinical AI solutions that address critical and escalating health challenges.

We are especially honored as the award comes from groups like Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA), Vector Institute, Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), Meta Facebook that have deep research expertise in AI.
Congrats to all the other winners!
Healthcare, like most other industries, has been experimenting with the use of large language models (LLMs) over the past year to streamline things like patient communication, clinical documentation and prior authorization.
While there has certainly been a great deal of hype recently surrounding LLMs and other forms of generative AI, there has also been a lot of skepticism. When it comes to an industry like healthcare, where one small technology failure could be the difference between life and death, many stakeholders are concerned about how to mitigate the risks associated with novel LLMs entering the field.
On October 8th, a riveting panel discussion unfolded on the role of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT in healthcare. Moderated by Mohana Ravindranath from STAT News, the panel featured heavy-hitters in the healthcare and tech worlds: Dr. Suchi Saria, CEO of Bayesian Health and Research Director at Johns Hopkins University; Sunita Mishra, CMO of Amazon Health Services; and Alex Momeni, Partner at General Catalyst.
The conversation pivoted around the question: Are LLMs the killer application in healthcare, or should the focus shift to more practical, non-LLM based solutions? Dr. Saria appreciates journalist-moderated panels for their knack in drilling down to the core of issues quickly, and this panel was no exception.
Stay tuned for insights on how LLMs and other AI technologies are shaping the future of healthcare, from optimizing clinical workflows to potential game-changing applications.

We’re beyond excited to announce that Bayesian has been recognized as a honoree in Modern Healthcare’s Top Innovator Organizations for 2023! This is not just an award; it’s a validation of our mission to change the face of healthcare through advanced clinical AI.
What makes this honor even more special is the company we keep. We’re joined by impressive healthcare institutions like Children’s Hospital and Medical Center – Omaha, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Banner | Aetna, NorthShore – Edward-Elmhurst Health, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and the Veterans Health Administration, among others.
Modern Healthcare notes that our industry is ripe for innovation, praising organizations that have “successfully employed creative strategies to achieve tangible results.” We’re proud to be part of this distinguished group that’s truly making an impact.
The faster we demystify the selection and utilization of AI platforms for Healthcare organizations; the faster we can get to material outcomes.
To make things simple and accessible, Bayesian Health collaborated with Oliver Wyman to create 2 visuals that should be on every Health executives desk as they contemplate AI platforms and solutions.
Suchi Saria, PhD was asked to give the closing keynote at IJCAI. IJCAI stands for International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, first established in 1969, is the oldest and one of the most prominent meetings in AI held annually. For 2023, the event was held in Macau.
Dr. Saria spoke about:
(a) our results in AI for augmenting care teams and
(b) state-of-the-art tools for ensuring safe and responsible deployment of AI in the real-world.
Thanks to my phenomenal collaborators all over but especially at Bayesian Health and at The Johns Hopkins University.
