Bayesian Health expands physician leadership to meet the shift toward AI-driven, proactive care

Dr. Martin E. Doerfler joins as Chief Medical Officer and Dr. Stephen Dorner joins as Chief Medical Officer for Care Transformation, as Bayesian's real-time clinical intelligence platform accelerates the operating model shift health systems need to make AI-driven early detection deliver real value

8/17/26 — Bayesian Health, the real-time clinical intelligence platform focused on early detection of the leading causes of hospital mortality and utilization, today announced two senior appointments to its clinical leadership. Martin E. Doerfler, MD, joins as Chief Medical Officer and Stephen Dorner, MD, MPH, MSc joins as Chief Medical Officer for Care Transformation.

The appointments reflect Bayesian's conviction that reaching this next era of care, one where the leading causes of mortality and utilization are detected and addressed early, requires a wholesale shift in how health systems approach clinical and quality strategy. Bayesian is expanding the team leading that shift alongside its partners.

"Health systems are at an inflection point," said Suchi Saria, Founder and CEO of Bayesian Health. "Clinical AI has moved from pilot to strategy. But getting this right takes more than new technology, it takes a different approach to how health systems build and run their care transformation strategy. Marty and Stephen bring the clinical credibility and health system experience to help lead that shift with our partners."

These appointments mark Bayesian's next phase: helping health systems build AI into their clinical and quality operating model, so that acting early becomes how they move the needle on outcomes and financial performance, not one more activity layered on top.

Momentum Behind the Growth

For a care team, the difference between catching deterioration early and catching it too late is measured in hours, and in lives. Bayesian has proven able to reduce sepsis mortality by 18.2% and get patients on antibiotics a median of 1.85 hours sooner.

Bayesian's platform is deeply integrated within the EHR, continuously reviewing the full patient record to learn each patient's baseline and surface those who need attention when it matters most. It started with sepsis, one of the hardest problems in the hospital, and has since expanded to other leading drivers of mortality and utilization.

Bayesian received FDA clearance for its sepsis module in May 2026, the first continuous AI sepsis monitor to reach that milestone. Sepsis remains one of the leading causes of preventable death in U.S. hospitals, contributing to an estimated 270,000 deaths each year, with survival odds dropping with every hour treatment is delayed.

The company also partnered with Mayo Clinic to expand into palliative care, where early identification has improved length of stay and readmissions. Palliative care is the latest condition to go live on the platform, demonstrating how the same real-time intelligence built for sepsis becomes a repeatable playbook across service lines.

Clinical Leadership With a Track Record of Transformation

Dr. Doerfler brings more than 40 years of experience as a critical care physician, physician-scientist, entrepreneur, and senior health system leader, including 15 years as a member of senior leadership at Northwell Health. Having sat on the health system side, he knows what it takes for executive teams to drive large-scale clinical change, and what it takes to make it last.

"I've spent my career in health systems trying to do right by patients under real operational pressure," said Doerfler. "What drew me to Bayesian is that this platform doesn't just flag risk. It gives clinicians the lead time to act on it. That's the kind of AI health systems actually need. Physicians need to lead in bringing this technology to the bedside, and that is exactly what Stephen and I intend to do."

Dr. Dorner is an emergency physician and health system leader experienced in building new models of care delivery and leading the operational change they require. At Mass General Brigham, he scaled the Hospital at Home program into one of the most closely watched efforts to rethink where and how acute care is delivered. He has also built programs in mobile integrated health, telehealth, virtual observation, and remote patient monitoring. He is on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and continues to practice at Massachusetts General Hospital. He brings a frontline understanding of what it takes to shift care from reactive to proactive, and will help health systems navigate that change.

"The emergency department shows you the cost of missed signals and late detection," said Dorner. "I've spent my career using that vantage point to build better care models that improve outcomes. Every one has taught me the same thing: rethinking care delivery, whether in a clinic, hospital, or a patient's home, starts with giving clinicians better signal, earlier. That's what brought me to Bayesian."

Dr. Doerfler and Dr. Dorner join because this shift can't happen from the outside. It takes leaders with deep clinical and operational experience working inside health systems' own workflow redesign efforts. That is what they bring to Bayesian's partners.

About Bayesian Health

Bayesian Health is the real-time clinical intelligence platform that helps health systems deliver proactive, high-reliability care. By continuously reading the full patient record to establish each patient's baseline and detect meaningful change over time, Bayesian applies complex clinical reasoning to identify the patients who need attention and surface clear next steps. Built to work within leading EHR systems, the platform adds a continuous intelligence layer that helps care teams intervene earlier. Bayesian has partnered with leading health systems to shift from reactive to proactive care across the key drivers of mortality, readmissions, and length of stay, making quality a durable strategy rather than a series of disconnected initiatives.
